Father Edward Sorin established Cedar Grove in 1843 just one year after he founded Notre Dame. (Freshman year used to be really tough!!) For most of its history this was a Catholic cemetery open to the public. Many prominent South Bend families have plots in the cemetery as well as many people with deep connections to the University. The priests and brothers of the Congregation are buried on the other side of campus.
Please take time to look around. The surnames on the markers are an indication of Notre Dame’s and South Bend’s rich and diverse ethnic history.
