Geocache Description:

St Patrick's and Armoy Round Tower.

The early monastery at Armoy is reputed to have been founded by a disciple of St. Patrick - St. Olcan, this is widely believed, although can not necessarily be established as fact.

The round tower of Armoy was built as a free standing bell tower in the 11th or 12th century. 800 years later, in 1843 the upper structure of the tower had to be restored.

Dozens of skeletons, dating back as far as the 15th century, were lifted and examined within St Patrick's church, just outside the village of Armoy, Co Antrim, in the course of the 1997 excavation.

The remains included the feet of a leprosy sufferer, the only one ever encountered on an archaeological site in Ireland.

Many of the people had been buried in coffins, indicated by lines of iron nails and occasional slivers of wood around them. Shroud pins and copper coins, possibly once laid on the eyes of the deceased, were recovered.

The bones were reinterred in a special grave in the church cemetery three years ago.

The tower was pressed into service as a belfry for Armoy Church of Ireland parish church. After a new bell tower was built beneath the church in 1869, the round tower fell silent again. The church and tower are barely 10 metres apart.

You will also find an ancestral link here to Oscar Wilde, the Reverend Ralph Wilde buried in the churchyard was his great grandfather.
