Geocache Description:

RCBDS banner This is the August 9, 2008 RCGDS event:

Summer School in Davis

A pot-luck picnic with fun and food, a Technocache, and an educational program on the campus of the University of California in Davis. Timeframe: 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Come meet some other geocachers from the area. Davis is centrally located in Northern California, so we expect geocachers from all over Northern California. Davis is still one of the densest caching areas in California, so come and find them.... You might bring your bike and do your caching by bike (rack up a dozen cachefinds without burning any gasoline).

An event at the UCDavis campus would not be complete without significant opportunity to learn something. So we will have a classroom available, but unlike other Summer Schools, you can skip the class and just hang out with your friends.

For the socializing at the event: Bring a picnic blanket and/or lawn chairs. There are no picnic tables. There is plenty of shady lawn area. Nearby we have a large open lawn area for tossing frisbees, playing ball, etc. North of the site is the UCDavis Arboretum - great for geocaching or just learning about trees and plants that grow well in Northern California.

Food and drink:

  • Bring whatever you like to cook on the grill (the grill will be hot from 5 to 7 pm)
  • Also bring some food to share (side dish, snacks, etc)
  • Main announcements at 6:30

Activities: There will be some geocaching activities in addition to the typical RCGDS event activities

  • Technocache - Q&A (3:30 - 4:30 pm; room 146 near the posted coordinates)- bring your questions if you have any; if you know a lot, come and give answers. We'll have a computer, projector and demo stuff. (There will not be an internet connection for general use).
  • Lecture on Advanced use of GSAK (4:30 - 5:30 pm in room 146) - Content: Filtering with Arc/Polygons; Along a route; Within a complex region (not a circle). Writing a macro to automate several actions; Creating a macro to do a set of actions; assign this to a button; etc
  • More: TBA (check back here later)

Parking: See additional waypoints for parking opportunities. There is no parking enforcement on Saturdays so you don't need a permit (even if it seems to imply that it would be good to buy a permit.

Cost: as with all RCGDS geocaching events, there is no cost to attend. However, a donation to the RCGDS kitty is appreciated to help defray the costs of the events and supplies.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: There will be a raffle with miscellaneous geocaching and back-to-school related items. Feel free to bring more items for the raffle.

RSVP: Click here: to tell us (1) how many in your group Will Attend, (2) what you are planning to bring for the pot luck and (3) what sorts of questions and expertise you are bringing to the Technocache.

For those of you new to geocaching in the greater Sacramento area - this event is for you (as well as for anyone else, of course). RCGDS stands for "Rivercity Geocaching and Dining Society" whic has a webiste http://www.rcgds.net and a listserve to which you can easily subscribe. It is a loose-knit group of friends which you are automatically a member of it by virtue of reading this. On the second Saturday of each month we have a gathering somewhere in the greater Sacramento area.
