Indiana Spirit Quest #611: Patriots Ridge Traditional Cache

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries and historic sites built by Hoosier Pioneers. In almost four years, the quest has grown to over six hundred caches hidden in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Ontario, and the hiders have grown to over forty cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cacher teams have logged over 50,000 finds.

It's amazing what hidden treasures you can discover when you "fly" Google Earth. We found this little gem in the aerials and decided we had to go visit it.

Near the Indiana Ohio border, just outside of the little burg of Charlestown in Union Township, Union County is Crawford Cemetery. Except for a great iron fence and gate, you would never know there was a cemetery here. There is plenty of room to park in the grass along the fence.

Hidden on this little ridge are the final resting spots of many of the area's early settlers. Jacob Bake moved his family to the area in 1806. He established the first grist mill in the county, served as Justice of the Peace and was one of the few men from Union County to serve in the War of 1812. Jacob's father, John Bake, Sr., though not buried here, also served his country as a Revolutionary War soldier who crossed the Delaware with George Washington.

Near Jacob's grave, you will find the grave of Samuel Meredith who served 7 years in the Revolutionary War. He lived to the grand age of 80 years and 4 days.

The cache is a decon container with room for small trades. As usual, the cache is hidden away from graves. Have fun and please leave the cache exactly as found.
