I've wanted to follow this trail for a long time, because I wanted
a 'short cut' to Buzzards Lagoon, that didn't involve a drive to
the backside of the forest. In doing so, I discovered another
cool trail with a black stream gurgling in and out of the ground
along the way.
This trail was a pleasant surprise, as I had seen the entrance
several times while going to and from the 5-finger falls.
Getting to 5-finger falls and Monte Vista is challenging
enough, so I decided to add in one more climb, and call it a
Terrain Challenge. Sorry, its pretty tough getting
here. But the reward is usually worth it.
I get here by leaving from the Aptos Nisene Marks main entrance to
the forest by bicycle. I ride to the White Lagoon, where
bikes are no longer allowed. Then I lock my bike and hike the
rest of the way. This makes for a pleasant downhill ride at
the end of the journey.
The Big Slide trail gets you back down to the Aptos Creek.
Hiking along the Aptos creek is one of the highlights of the
forest.
I've included the coordinates for the unmarked trailhead, where it
heads up the mountain on the other side of the stream.
Note: YoFoghorn found that the top of the trail is private
property. It is not recommended that you try to come here via
Buzzards Lagoon. It is also possibly a bad part of the
neighborhood, not a good place to leave your car.
