Geocache Description:

A cache to commemorate the flight of the First Geocoin in Orbit, or FGIO. Cache is located near the Knik River.

Back in February of this year (2008) my good friend Dr. Love (yes, he's stuck with that) flew on STS-122 Space Shuttle Atlantis to deliver the European Science Module. Due to happy circumstance, I have known him for many, many years. He carried 3 items for our family in his personal locker on that orbital flight.

One was an icon of St. Herman of Alaska, blessed over his relics on Spruce Island. Another was a rookie card of Scotty Gomez, our favorite NHL local boy.

At the last minute, another slot opened up, and I chose an Astrolabe geocoin, TB16CKV. To my knowledge, it is the only geocoin to make it into orbit. Soon, I should have it framed and I'll make it available for geo-events.

This spring, Crake Geocoins made a special geocoin, the FGIO geocoin, to commemorate the trip. I have also received the mission highlight film with description compiled by the astronauts for their post flight presentations. It doesn't have sound (so they can talk over the majority of it, but it is high definition, with some shots not seen by the general news media.

There are 8 DVDs of this film with notes in the cache, and I will gladly make more as needed. One per family group please. The FTF prize is a bronze FGIO geocoin.

Parking is available and other caches are in the area.

Terrain makes coordinates tricky. I never got better than +- 50 feet. Hide the cache with material at hand. Good luck!
