INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST
#621
"View From a Hill"
This quest will bring you to the Mount
Pleasant Cemetery near the small town of Hall in northern Morgan
County. This cemetery was placed on a high hill and offers
wonderful views to the east. The photos don't really do the view
justice, but you'll get to see the real thing when you visit.

Veteran's Memorial
A very nice memorial has been built that lists all the veterans
buried here. As you can see it is a substantial list.

Three-war Veteran
Robert Seng fought for the United States in three different
wars.

The 70th Indiana Regiment included many men from Morgan
County. The regiment was best known for its commander, Colonel
Benjamin Harrison, who went on after the war to become the
President of the United States. The 70th was a 3-year regiment and
served from 1862 until the end of the war. The regiment was
initially stationed in Kentucky and then saw action in Tennessee
before participating in Sherman's advance on Atlanta. It then moved
to the seige of Savannah before moving into South Carolina and
moving north, where the soldiers were mustered out in Washington DC
after the end of the war. The regiment lost 86 men in action and
102 to disease.
Besides Sergeant Garrison, another veteran of the 70th that I
suspect might be buried here is William McCracken. Mr. McCracken
owned the drug store in Monrovia for 32 years, served as Morgan
County Recorder, and was the grandfather of the famous Indiana
University basketball coach Branch McCracken. He rose from private
to 2nd lieutenant during his service with the 70th. Keep an eye out
for his grave as well.
The 70th Indiana regiment .

33rd Indiana Veteran
Pretty much any cemetery in Morgan County that is old enough to
have Civil War veterans buried in it has men who were in the 33rd
Indiana Volunteers. Mt. Pleasant has a few 33rd Indiana veterans.
This headstone for Michael Wilhite is easy to spot and is located
in the area with the wonderful views from the hilltop. Like the
70th, the 33rd served in Kentucky, Tennessee and it was a soldier
of the 33rd who was the first Union soldier to enter Atlanta.
The cache container is A
LARGE PEANUT BUTTER JAR. You MUST sign the log to claim a
Smilie. The cache is not located near a grave... If you find a
fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always,
please be respectful of our pioneer dead and cache in, trash
out.
