Geocache Description:

The coordinates above point at the Brotfallscharte on the trial to the summit of Grosser Priel, but are not obliged to visit this place. It is sufficient to visit some place, from where you can see the plateau of the Totes Gebirge with touristic sign.

Totes Gebirge (The Dead Mountains) are the largest limestone plateau of the Eastern Alps. It lies on the border of Upper Austria and Styria and its area is 1150 km sq.. The highest point is Grosser Priel (2515m), but the altitude of the plateau is approx. 1900m. The area is made from limestone and dolostone (dolomite), which were made in the Trias and Jura epoch 210 – 135 million years ago.

The name of the area comes from the fact, that there is almost no vegetation on the plateau. This is caused with absence of the water, which is closely related to the fact, that the limestone can be dissolved in water. Many of the karst features like caves, limestone pavement, dolines can be seen in the area and many of them can be seen just looking to the plateau.

Your task is to find one of the karst features called doline. Doline is natural depression. It has usually round shape and its dimensions can be from several meters to several hundred meters in diameter and in depth as well.

You must fulfill following requirements for log this cache:
  • Upload a photo of the plateau with description of two or three points (mountains, passes) and a photo of you and the touristic sign. Both photos has to be taken from the same place.
  • Send me a e-mail with a photo of a doline with doline marked on the photo and a description, how a doline evolves. My e-mail address is martin(dot)netolicky(at)gmail(dot)com. You can write your e-mail in English, German and Czech language.
