Geocache Description:

An easy multi cache set around Easby. There are no longer any caches in the immediate area and it’s a lovely place to visit so we thought it was worthy of this cache!

Park at N54.23.828 W001.42.965. From the suggested parking at Easby Church, it is a very short walk to the first part! It is a magnetic nano containing the coordinates for the final box. Try and avoid finding this cache on a Sunday as the area is busy with people going to the church. For the final box walk back down the road and take the bridleway and it is again only a short walk away. The path can be muddy. Reception may not be very good in this area due to tree cover but the clue should help. Please make sure you replace the box how you found it. Stealth is required as Easby is a popular walking area.
A bit of history about the church and the abbey: Easby Church is thought to predate the Abbey although the exact date is unknown. Little of the original church remains. In Easby Church is a plaster replica of the carved stone Easby Cross. The original, which dates from the late 7th or early 8th century, is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The Abbey was founded in 1152 by Roald, Constable of Richmond Castle. Like most northern monasteries, Easby suffered from frequent Scottish raids during the Middle Ages. Ironically, great damage was caused to Easby in 1346 when the English army was billeted there on its way to the Battle of Neville's Cross. In the late 1530s Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. The abbey was abandoned and left to fall into ruins, though some of the best features were salvaged: the fine canopied choir stalls are now found in Richmond parish church.
There are several information boards around the area if you wish to find out more.
Happy hunting.
