Geocache Description:

Located in the Great Smoky Mtns National Park
Cades Cove area

Note from DavidMac: Since the original owners have disappeared from this site, I have adopted this cache and it's partner rather than have them archived in order to keep these well-planned caches going. Over the years, however, Cades Cove has seen numerous upgrades and improvements that have made the original questions obsolete. My goal has been to keep these caches up-to-date while maintaining the spirit of the original descriptions. Over time the puzzles and questions have changed, but my hope is that you still get the same amount of enjoyment out of these caches today as when they were first listed.

Because there is no cache container to be found (this is a national park, after all), you will need to verify your visit by emailing me the answers to several of the questions along the way: (DO NOT post them in your log!)
1) At Site #2, what name did you use to calculate the north coordinate?
2) At site #4, what have returned to the cove?
3) At site #6, what building are you standing in front of?

AJ' Dad and Wirenut (the original creator of these virtual tours) stated, "Cades Cove is one of my most favorite places in the world. My family has been visiting there for thirty years or more. My brother and I decided to create these virtual multi-caches to show you some of our favorite spots in the cove."

Here’s how it works:
Start at the coordinates provided below for stage 1... NOT the coordiantes on the cache page! At each location you will have to do one of two things to obtain a 3-digit number: find a word or count one or more objects. The math is simple and is intended to be done in the field or while stuck in a line of traffic waiting to drive to the next spot. If asked for a word, convert the first three letters to numbers using the key below:

A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9 J=0 K=1 L=2 M=3 N=4 O=5 P=6 Q=7 R=8 S=9 T=0 U=1 V=2 W=3 X=4 Y=5 Z=6

Examples:
1) Say your answer is the word “smoky”. Using the chart above gives us S=9 M=3 O=5. So the magic number is 935.
2) Say I ask you to count the number of chairs and tables at a site. You see 12 chairs and 4 tables. The magic number is 124.

Now, add your 3-digit number to the number given in parentheses. The result will be the 3 digits after the decimal in the coordinates to the next stage. If the sum is greater than 1000, simply drop the 1:

North: N35º 35.____ (346) (+ answer #1) -> 346+935 -> 1281 ->281 (drop the 1)
West: W083º 48.____ (622) (+answer #2) -> 622+124 -> 746

If calculated correctly, the answer is the coordinates of the first stage:
N35º 35.281
W083º 48.746

Ready? Then head to the following coordinates (NOT the coordinates above!) and answer the following questions:

--------
SITE #1 N35 35.281 W083 48.746

North: How many fireplaces does the house have? How many windows are downstairs (full windows with glass)?
West: How many doors are there downstairs, both indoors and out (don’t count the crawlspace door!)? Go across the road to the barn. How many rungs are on each ladder (there are two that both have the same number)?

Coords to site 2:
N35º 34.___ (690)+ ________ = ________
W083º 50.___ (231)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #2

North: What is the first name of the person who this structure is named after, according to the sign in the parking lot?
West: There is a covered porch between the two halves of the building. How many round posts hold up this porch on the side away from the parking lot? Now go back out to the parking lot and grab the two-digit number from the sign.

Coords to site 3:
N35º 35.___ (256)+ ________ = ________
W083º 50.___ (88)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #3

North: Watch your step! What is active around the buildings here?
West: The corn crib doubles as a ____ shed.

Coords to site 4:
N35º 36.___ (398)+ ________ = ________
W083º 49.___ (225)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #4

North: The sign describes how native ____ have returned to the cove.
West: In approximately what year did settlers grow crops such as corn in 8-12 acre plots? Divide by 10.

Coords to site 5:
N35º 36.___ (350)+ ________ = ________
W083º 48.___ (633)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #5

North: How many rows or pews are there from front to back? How many rows of choir pews on each side are turned sideways to face the pulpit?
West: Take a walk in the cemetery out back. You may be surprised to learn that people are still buried in cemeteries in the park. Relatives of original residents can petition the park supervisor to obtain a burial permit in one of several cemeteries. Take a walk around the cemetery loop and head all the way to the back. On the inside of the loop you will see a very new headstone right against the chain. In what year did this person pass away? Subtract 1500.

Coords to site 6:
N35º 36.___ (098)+ ________ = ________
W083º 46.___ (078)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #6 (END)

You made it! Now to claim your find, email me the answers to the three required questions found near the top of the cache page when posting your log.
