Marlboro was named when a large deposit of Marl was discovered here
on May of 1911. Marl or Marlstone is a mixture of calcium carbonate
and clay and was used in the manufacture of cement and bricks. It
is no longer used for that purpose as it has been replaced by
limestone. In 1913 Edmonton Portland Cement built a plant here to
mine and process the Marl into portland cement. The Marlboro Cement
plant was the first of its kind in Alberta. The plant operated
until 1931 when the operation was purchased by Canada Cement.
Shortly after that it was closed and the operation was moved to
Edmonton. All that remains of the plant is the smoke stack and some
partial walls. If you continue down the road past the cache to the
townsite you will get a closer view.
