Brocks Gap allows passage through Little North Mountain in Northwest Rockingham County. Just one mile west of the gap stands a vertical ledge of Ridgeley Sandstone, a remnant of an era when the entire area was submerged in a great ocean. Named Chimney Rock, the unique formation at the western side of the gap contains fossil evidence of brachiopods, gastropods, and pelecypods – marine life.
In the shadow of Chimney Rock, literally, is VFW Post 9660 where members of the greatest generation meet with other veterans every month on the second Tuesday at 8:00pm. If you happen to be caching while they are around, take time and thank them for their service.
The cache you seek is in direct view of Chimney Rock but IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES. Since you will be visiting a large rock, this cache borrows from the musical genre of rock. Many rock songs use numbers in the title. You will need to dig deep and remember (or find) the number associated with the following rock groups and their song titles. To get the correct coordinates, you must solve the following:
N 38 E (F+G). (C+J) (B-I) I
W 078 (A-E) (D-G). H (B+C) D
A = Days a week (Beatles)
B = Mambo (Lou Bega)
C = Out of Three (Meatloaf)
D = Love Potion (Searchers)
E = Chains of Gold (Prince)
F = Loneliest Number (Three Dog Night)
G = Magnificent (The Clash)
H = 2 is divided by (Pet Shop Boys)
I = 25 or 6 to approaching hour (Chicago)
J = Total of the three digits in a Gloria Estefan Song
The cache is NOT inside the fence. The cache area IS prime for CITO activity, so consider taking a trash bag. And – don’t even THINK about climbing the rock. The container is large enough to hold larger items. Please try to keep with the rock music theme of this cache – so feel free to exchange original CD’s (since geocachers are not pirates) or rock memorabilia, as well as travel bugs/geocoins. You may wish to use the camera in the cache to snap a picture of yourself or your group with the formation in the background.
Original contents of the cache: Linda Ronstadt Greatest Hits CD; Doobie Bros. Greatest Hits CD; Fuji Disposable Camera (To Stay with cache); and Ruth Creek (AK) Red Jeep Travel Bug
Thanks for playing!! Congratulations to prof.gl.emu for the FTF!!!!
