canal park cache Traditional Cache
lilypicker: My apologies! Due to health issues I am no longer able to maintain the trail. Town officials have discussed improving the trail through the area but I don't know when or if that will actually happen. Until that time, please enjoy at your own risk!

Located just off a trail along the CT River. Trail is dirt with grass and a few foot bridges. May have muddy spots after rain.
Cache is located along the midpoint of what is claimed to be the first navigable canal in the U.S. Most of the canal has been filled in at this point. Original canal started just below the Rte. 116 bridge and ended just below the rapids or across from the dino tracks located on the Holyoke side of the river along Rte. 5. Park in the lot near the deck overlooking the river and enjoy the view of the river and Mt. Tom. Access the trail by walking along the road to the north toward the the end of West Summit St. Two large rocks mark the beginning of the trail which is grass at that point. Be sure to read about the history of the canal on the way. Eventually you will come to the water and a place to launch canoes and kayaks. Cache is not far from this location. Watch for poison ivy along this last stretch of trail.
