Geocache Description:

By George, who could drive past. Great view of the EastLink both North and South! And a little history to boot.

On February 10th, 2006, from the Minister for Public Transport, a Media Release stated:

START OF GEORGE STREET BRIDGE AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN EASTLINK CONSTRUCTION.

The start of construction of the George Street bridge over EastLink marked the start of a huge year of construction in Knox, with major bridge works soon to start across the region, Transport Minister Batchelor said today.

A long-running community campaign calling for the bridge to be constructed convinced Mr Batchelor to include the George St connection as part of EastLink. Visiting the site of the bridge yesterday, Mr Batchelor said the progress of EastLink was outstanding.

“The start of work today on the George St connection marks another extremely important milestone for the Knox community and for EastLink,” Mr Batchelor said.

“Bayswater MP Peter Lockwood and the local community fought very hard to have this bridge included as part of the EastLink construction and I am very pleased to be in Knox today with Peter to see this community campaign become a reality.

“The bridge will ensure that Wantirna South residents continue to enjoy the access that was previously provided by Cathies Lane.”

Mr Batchelor said the George Street bridge was part of the biggest bridge building program in Victoria’s history.

“Knox will be the focus of major bridging work this year, with other major bridges to start at Ferntree Gully Road, High Street Road, Mountain Highway and Burwood Highway,” Mr Batchelor said.

“Overall, the progress of EastLink has been phenomenal and Australia’s biggest road project is on target for completion and opening to the public in 2008.”

Work taking place at George Street includes insertion of bridge piles as part of the first stage of construction of the bridge over EastLink. This consists of pre-drilling holes to a depth of about 8.5 metres. The piles are then placed in the holes and driven by use of a hydraulic piling rig.

The bridge is now completed.
