Geocache Description:


La Citadelle a été construite sur les plans de Vauban
entre 1668 et 1672 sur l'ordre de Louis XIV.
Son rôle initial : Protéger la ville contre des invasions ennemies (Pays Bas Espagnols plus particulièrement) mais sa position forte peu stratégique lui valût rapidement le surnom de "Belle inutile".

The Citadel was built on plans Vauban
between 1668 and 1672 on the order of Louis XIV.
His initial role: to protect the city against enemy invasions (Spanish Netherlands in particular) but its little strategic strong position
gave quickly it the nickname "Belle useless".
