A 6/7 mile walk taking 3 hours with a sandwich break and looking for clues etc. Can be very muddy in places - boots advisable.
Superlatives are not enough for this walk – the views, the wildlife, the peace – if anyone doesn’t enjoy this walk (or doesn’t see a Red Kite) please apply for your money back.
It’s a long walk for just one cache – however I’ve designed it to go close to a number of other caches (and even used them as waypoints!) – so without straying too far from the trail it’s possible to log 7 or 8 (if you prepare well enough in advance).
The initial location is the car park. You can park at other places however all directions are given from this car park.
The final co-ordinates are N53 52.ABC W001 29.DEF – roadside spot within a mile of the initial location. When you get there look up and not down.
From the car park cross the main Harrogate Road and enter the Harewood Estate through the gates. The first waypoint is ‘Beautiful Harewood’ (placed by Brown Owl). Just a little further on is a bridge overlooking a wide stream. Count the number of separate whole balcony spindle supports on the middle sections of each side of the bridge = 30 something where the something = C.
Cross the bridge and the path goes to the left then to the right – and onto my 1st published waypoint H1 - a crossroads. The number of owls on all the signs here = F. The path to the left, in a few hundred yards leads to “Got you by the Dingles” (placed by Warlock1). Our path now follows Ebor Way down and to the right (a less steep option is available if you go straight on for 50 yards or so before turning right).
Once the path has levelled out, follow straight on towards to the next published waypoint H2. After crossing a bridge by some houses go up the hill – where on top it is possible to see a deer herd. At H2 there is a solitary sign – number of pointed directions = B.
Take the path to the right and follow upwards and straight on to the Harrogate Road. If you fancy a detour there is a road off to the right leading to Harewood Church just after you enter the tree avenue. At the main road, cross and take the footpath going across the nearside of the pub. After about a quarter of a mile (just as the view opens out to the left) there is a gate on the right leading to a gas high pressure installation – how many blue circle symbols are there on the signs = D.
Just a little further on towards waypoint H3 there is a wall on the left with plenty of holes. It was here that I saw a stoat or a weasel playing in and out of the holes. At H3 there is a sign with a telephone number where E is the 2nd digit. On the post I also found some large bird droppings which contained small stones – wonder what the bird could be?.
We’re taking the track to the right – but straight on at this point you can see the Harewood Hill Climb snaking its way up the hill. The track leads to a busy road - turn left and take the next turn on the right (just after a vehicle pull in on the LHS). This track first takes you to a group or buildings – pass by to the left. If there’s any mud (and other unmentionables) it will be here! Drop down the hill. Once through the last gate the way forward is straight ahead, but the track to the right gets to the same place with less mud. Pass the next property to the right and onto the pond, waypoint H4, where there is a metal grate mid point down the left hand side - number of bits of metal sticking up (over about 1cm) = A.
Follow up the hill to “Leeds Country Way - Junction View” (placed by MaxKim) – then turn right and straight ahead back to the car park. A half mile journey left at this point will bring you to “Leeds Country Way – Boulder” (placed by MaxKim).
Not to give too much away but 2 puzzle caches are also on the route round – “Butterflies” (placed by MaxKim) and “Mouse Hunt 1” (placed by Acidmouse – “Mouse Hunt 2” is a short drive away). Also "4 Star Delivery" is near the Final.
Enjoy.
