Before us sat the celebrated American authoress, Miss Jacqueline Susann. Originally from Philadelphia, she was a woman of obvious breeding and education, even though her sometimes scandalous prose suggested otherwise.
"I believe someone is taunting me, Mr. Holmes. In last Friday's post, I received this doll." She handed the object to Holmes, who gave it a cursory look.
"Porcelain, from the Boscombe Valley." he remarked. "There is no kiln marking, but it is unmistakably from the region. Did you happen to notice the imprint inside the hem of the doll's skirt?"
Upon closer examination, we could barely discern the lettering: yjotyuyep gptyurohjy gpitpmrdrbrm
"Now, may I see the other doll you received?" asked Holmes.
Miss Susann looked at him incredulously. "How on earth did you know there was another doll?"
"Tut tut, Miss Susann. We have no time for that right now. Please, if you would, the other doll."
The next doll was indeed similar, but it looked eerily like a reverse image twin of the first. The inscription on the doll read: bubwrtauz rguertawcwb wufgrdiyeauz
"Mr. Holmes, why do you think someone would torment me with these toys; these obvious references to my most famous work?"
"I think you know precisely why, Miss Susann. Your roman á clef surely is the source. Will you be returning to America anytime soon?"
"Why yes, Mr. Holmes. I voyage on the Queen Mary this Tuesday next."
Holmes hurriedly scribbled something on a small piece of notepaper.
"Take this with you, Miss Susann. When you get back to the States, you'll find what you seek at the address noted."
What did Holmes see?
Co-ordinates were determined with a Garmin 60Cx with WAAS enabled, under ideal conditions, averaged over a three minute span, to an accuracy of 10.9 ft.
