Geocache Description:

Black Eagle Falls

This cache is located in the Walter Sisulu (Witwatersrand) National Botanical Garden (established in 1982). Recorded sightings of the Black Eagles (Aquila verreauxii) nesting on the cliffs adjacent to the imposing Witpoortjie Falls date back to the forties. The current breeding pair are probably the fourth generation following those initial sightings. Opening times, entrance fees and further information can be found here.

This multi-cache starts (the listed coordinates) at a fall of a different kind. Once you've parked, you have 2 options to get here:
  • You can take the path from the waterfall viewing location listed below (all told about 2km round-trip from the parking coordinates).
  • Alternatively, we'd suggest that you do this cache towards the end of a caching day in the gardens. There are a large number of caches hidden here... (There are four mystery caches in the garden, but that is all we will tell you! ) The attached file provides a suggested sequence (A longer walk of 7km or more for the round trip - very worthwhile!).
Sunscreen and a hat, along with something to drink are highly recommended. When you reach the listed coordinates you're looking for a date:

call these numbers WXYZ

While you're here, take a look at the path the 'fall' took and observe the repairs that were required.

The final cache location can be calculated as follows:

S 26 05.(Y-5)(Z)(Z-W) E27 50.(Z-2)(W)(Z-4)

The cache consists of a small container containing a log book, pencil and trade items. Please exercise caution when retrieving the cache since the location is slightly off the path and as a result you may attract some attention..
