Geocache Description:

Short hike to an old drain (used to float timber)

In former times rivers and brooks were used to float timber from the forests into the cities. Few brooks have enough water for this purpose, so dams (forming artificial reservoirs) had to be built. The timber was piled up in the river bed. When the waterstorages were drainded the timber was flushed downstream. The german word for such a dam-construction is „Klause“ (same origin as close).

In the area of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf remnants of a widespread system of these drains can be found. 13 minor and 1 major drain worked together, floating timber as far as Baden. The system was in use until 1939.

This cache is part of a series of caches, dealing with the subject (TAKL = TriftAnlageKlausenLeopoldsdorf). Don't forget to note down the information on the front page of the logbook, you will need it for the Bonus (which will be hidden later).

Driving is allowed only for residents. The path leads directly through a stud farm: Mind your dogs.

The Ranzenbach-Drain is overgrown with trees, not much is left of it. The dam and the overflow can still be seen.
As the dam is covered with trees and the ground in the reservoir is very wet the cache is hidden on the other side of the road. Classic hideout of course.

On the hillside above the stud farm there are several similar looking wooden houses. These houses were built in the 20th century as a “colony” to conquer the Wienerwald and turn it into farmland, an effort that failed. The footpath from the western ridge is marked but fairly overgrown in some parts. The last 50 m before you reach the road along the houses lead across a meadow. This seems to be intended. The view from up there is quite nice.

The cache is a small lock-lock-box (0,2 l), containing log-sheets, pencil and a few small trading-items.
Please hide it well again.
Have fun!
