This is one of a series of four caches placed along an old trackway that at one time was one of 2 roads over the Black Mountain to Brynaman. At one time it shared the same status on maps as the A4069 (favoured by Top Gear to film dramatic shots of cars driving along mountain roads). Three caches (including this one) are regular hides and the fourth is a bonus – collect the clues on the lids of the regulars to get the coordinates for the bonus.
Although not at the precise highest location of the trackway over the mountain, this is pretty close to the top.
Placed about 40 paces to the east of the trackway, the cache is hidden in one of the more prominent rocky outcrops.
While there, look out for the many large cairns placed on the top of nearby hills and for the dramatic peat landscape nearby. Further afield, many locations can be observed on a clear day. Binoculars may be a good accessory both to enjoy the view and to watch the diverse wildlife found up here.
Eclectic Penguin placed these caches to encourage people to make the scenic walk along the now forgotten highway to enjoy its stunning scenery along the way - but if this is the only cache you try in the series - enjoy!
The best approach is from a small car park located at 51°51.466'N, 3°52.675'W where the trackway starts as it branches off an existing narrow road.
