Phare des Mamelles
Le phare des Mamelles est situé sur la presqu'île du Cap-Vert, à environ 7,5 km au sud-est de la pointe des Almadies – l'extrémité occidentale du continent africain – et à 9 km au nord-ouest de Dakar (Sénégal), sur la plus occidentale et la plus grande des deux collines volcaniques coniques nommées Mamelles.
C'est le plus ancien phare de Dakar, considéré comme le plus puissant d'Afrique avec celui du cap de Bonne-Espérance.
Sa construction a été achevée en 1864, comme le rappelle l'inscription sur le fronton, modifiée en 1911.
En 1960, un accident d'avion à 2 400 m du phare a coûté la vie aux 63 passagers d'un Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation d'Air France, pour des raisons indéterminées.
L'accès au phare est gratuit. Une visite guidée est proposée par le gardien de service.
De là, mais aussi de la colline rocheuse elle-même — point culminant de Dakar et du Sénégal occidental —, le promeneur bénéficie d'une vue panoramique sur l'ensemble de la presqu'île, notamment la pointe des Almadies, N'Gor, Ouakam ou les îles de la Madeleine, sans parler de la capitale elle-même. On aperçoit notamment l'aéroport international Léopold Sédar Senghor.

Active; focal plane 120 m (394 ft); white flash every 5 s. 16 m (52 ft) cylindrical masonry tower with lantern and gallery, attached to the front of a 2-story keeper's house. 1° Fresnel lens in use. Entire structure painted white. A photo appears above, another photo is available, also a good closeup; a distant photo posted by Alexander Trabas shows the dramatic appearance of the cape from the sea. The French Wikipedia has an article on the lighthouse. This is one of the world's great lighthouses, guiding ships around the western tip of Africa. Its light has a range listed at 57 km (almost 36 mi). Sadly, poor maintenance of the aging equipment hinders the operation of the light, and the rapid erosion of the coastline endangers survival of the structure. A report at the end of 2007 showed an erosion rate of 2 m (6.5 ft) per year. Located on one of two rounded hills called Les Mamelles, about 7.5 km (4.5 mi) southeast of the Pointe des Almadies and 9 km (5.5 mi) northwest of Dakar.
