A cache and dash involving either one of the two most iconic means of communication ever placed on the streets of Britain. This series is dedicated to interesting places within the County of Wiltshire.
This cache is situated in the area known as Kellaways which is half way along Maud Heaths pathway. Maud Heath made a gift to the Trustees on the 12 June 1474 of around £8 a year plus her house and lands to construct a proper path from Wick Hill to Chippenham Clift and to maintain it forever. A four and a half mile path that still exists today. Maud was a widow and every week without fail she would go all the way on foot to the market in Chippenham to sell her butter and eggs.In Maud Heath’s life the country only consisted of perhaps 3 million people in total, and these people still presumed that the earth was flat. Well Christopher Columbus was yet to sail on his epic voyage in 1492, so times were hard and most basic, villages were isolated from one another and to get from one place to another one either rode on horseback, if well off, or just walked. There were no marked roads or paths as such, therefore in the summer the tracks that had been trampled down were dry, stony, rutted and dusty and in the winter, perilous with mud and puddles all over. At Kellaways where the River Avon passed through the countryside it was more often than not completely flooded for acres upon acres either side of the river, this would then resemble more of a swamp and marshland yet still to be crossed by people somehow even though it meant risking life or limb in doing so.
The Kellaways causeway from St Giles to the river Avon Bridge is something certainly different, there are sixty-four arches on the causeway, and it’s quite impressive.
Please place the cache back into the same position after finding and logging. All these caches may be found on the outside of the relevant icon, there are none inside.
Thank You.
