Geocache Description:

The Old SEPTA R8 Series - Holland

In 1983 the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) decided it no longer wanted to run diesel trains. Since the R8 line from Fox Chase to Newtown had not been electrified, service was temporarily suspended along that portion (and still is over 25 years later). This cache is at the old Holland stop on Holland Rd at Elm Av. The station was just a shed that was removed in the 1990's. All that remains is a small gravel area, some of the old signaling equipment, a telegraph pole and the rails. I guess most people walked to the station when it was in use since there is parking for five cars at best.

As mentioned above, service on this line has been "temporarily suspended". Apparently it - as well as others on this portion of the line - is still listed in the official tariffs. But with recent repaving projects the grade crossings on this line have been paved over. That along with the overgrowth on the right-of-way mean any train that tries to make the run isn't going to be staying on the tracks for too long. But saying its suspended and not abandoned probably gives SEPTA continued rights to the line.

The cache is a micro with only a log. Bring your own pen!

You do not need to try to open any of the electrical cabinets there or play with the lightbulb (amazing its still there and in one piece - let's keep it that way).
