This is a surprisingly nice stop along a newer section of the River's Edge Trail . There is a picnic table, a large shade tree, and a stairway down to a convenient platform along the river. Um... right next to the sewage treatment plant!
Don't worry, the prevailing winds normally carry the stench er reek, aroma um winds away from the river. The stairway and platform were once used to give easy access for workers to test the water quality of the effluent output from the plant. Again don't worry, the platform and waste discharge culvert were abandoned many years ago in favor of a newer structure a few hundred feet downstream.
As recently as 2004 this area was all fenced off and part of the sewage treatment plant. To continue your journey down the river, you had to go north and travel along the rail road tracks for half a mile, and then walk on the road for another mile or better.
In 2005 the River's Edge Trail was extended to link West bank park with Black Eagle Island, and this became a pleasant area to rest and recreate--provided the wind cooperates.
