Matthew Boulton Woz Ere Traditional Cache
Suebedz: Just been to Brum to have a look at this one and the cache is gone. With reluctance I'm going to archive it because the building is being turned into flats or should that be apartments and there is scaffolding all round. I will monitor how the work goes with a view to putting another cache near here when the building is finished. Thanks to all who visited.

Easy cache and dash on a well paved street. Muggles could be a problem. This is now a micro cache.
The Assay Office in Birmingham, founded in 1773, is the largest in the world. Items made from gold, silver and platinum are tested and hallmarked here. Birmingham's Assay mark is that of an anchor, according to the website, it is thought to have originated from the name of the Crown and Anchor public house where much of the committee work took place in petitioning Parliament.
A hallmark usually comprises of a maker's mark, a standard mark showing the purity of the metal, the assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter. The first three are compulsory and the latter optional.
The present building was built in 1877-78 and cost £9,448. A move to the jewellery quarter in 1972 was abandoned and another storey was built instead. On its first working day on the 31st August 1773, 200 items were hallmarked; during 2006 12 million items were hallmarked.
The first customer at the Birmingham Assay Office was Matthew Boulton hence the name of the cache.

The cache itself is a 35ml film pot. Easy parking when I placed it early evening but there may be problems during the day. Please be careful of muggles.
You will need to bring a pen ...... but don't all good cachers do that anyway?
Well done MJ for being the First to Find.
