If you're Going to the Well, stop and pick up an easy 'smiley' on your way. Getting to the cache requires at least a 1 mile round trip over a well used trail. The trail can be rocky and a detour around a landslide is well marked.
Going to the Well is located on the Natural Well Trail on Monte Sano State Park. The cache is located off a part of the trail that is fairly level but somewhat rocky. The cache not immediately visible, but most cachers will locate it easily. Expect to leave the trail. No severe bushwacking is required, but anytime you leave a trail, watch for poison ivy and crawly critters.
If you continue on to Natural Well, expect a 3.7 mile round trip hike with a 100 foot descent over the last half mile to the well. The well is a natural formation that is well worth the effort. The fencing around the well is not the most secure, so make sure children and pets are monitored.
The more ambitious can continue to the Arrowhead trail and return to the Natural Well trail intersection. This trail requires a descent of about 700 feet into McCay Hollow before climbing back to the Natural Well Trail 1 mile from the Trough Springs parking lot. Trail maps are available at the park office or by visiting briartech.com.
