On a busy road so care will need to be taken.

In the Defence of the Realm is a series which we are developing and covers mainly airfields used during and shortly after the Second World War If you wish to add to the series please feel free to do so.

Westhampnett airfield was also known as Chichester or Goodwood airfield.

07/40 to 08/40, Opened during the Battle of Britain, first Squadron; 145 Sqn Hurricanes from Tangmere, moved to Drem. 08/40 to 12/40, 602 Sqn Spitfires, moved to Prestwick. 1941-45, Airfield then used by many different Squadrons with Hurricanes, Spitfires, Typhoons and Tempests.
01/08/42 to 21/10/42, 308th and 309th Fighter Squadrons of the 31st Fighter Group from Atcham and High Ercall with Spitfire Vs. 26/07/42; 31st FG Flew first sorties with RAF, (total of 1,286 losing 5 aircraft) 09/10/42; flew last mission from Great Britain then moved to Gibraltar and fought with the XIIth USAAF in Africa and Italy.
Airfield closed 03/45 and re-opened 07/45.
07/45 to 11/45, 787 Sqn, Naval Air Fighting Development Unit, Central Fighter Establishment from Tangmere, moved to West Raynham. Airfield then on Care and Maintenance until closure 13/05/46.
