A gorgeous but little visited conservation reserve, 120km north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Hwy.
Arulte Atwatye (pronunced ar-ool-da ah-dwat-cha) or Native Gap is a small conservation reserve located only 120km north of Alice Springs. The reserve is not well signposted, and cars on the highway whizz past with very little idea about the pleasant BBQ area (with long drop toilet)and short walk that's there.
Arulte Atwatye means 'gap in the shoulder' or 'middle of the back' in Anmatjere, the local Aboriginal language. Native Gap is a sacred site; the place where several significant dreaming stories begin or finish their journeys. The senior custodians for this place welcome you to visit and respect this special place, just as you would a church or temple. Native Gap is a jointly managed park, like many other NT parks and reserves.
The reserve is also special because of the many native pines that are here (Calitris species). The rangers who manage this park take special care to stop both fires and weed infestations here in order to protect the pines. When you're visiting, note the absence of Buffel Grass (an introduced species) and the beauty of the pines against the ochre-coloured rocks of the range.
The cache is a short walk from the picnic area. Please explore and soak up the ambience of this special place.
