Geocache Description:

The three caches of this series are located along Waterloo's beautiful public biking trails. Cameras and flashlights are excellent for illuminating the fireflies! Bring a pen or pencil and bug spray! The gallery of Stage 1 contains a helpful trail map. Waypoints provide the location of the parking spot and trailheads. Stage 1 and Stage 2 may be completed independently, and each provide a clue which is needed to obtain the coordinate for Stage 3.

(Puzzle 1) To stimulate light emission, the light emitting organs of a firefly contain:
(i) luciferase and luciferin, then A = 0.
(ii) neon and electrons, then A = 6.
(iii) smoke and mirrors, then A = 1.

(Puzzle 2) The chemical reaction that produces light in the abdomen of the firefly is referred to as:
(i) fire, then B = 6.
(ii) bioluminescence, then B = 1.
(iii) fusion, then B = 9.

(Puzzle 3) Fireflies belong to the:
(i) Lampyridae family, then C = 1.
(ii) Tyrannosauridae family, then C = 8.
(iii) Hominidae family, then C = 4.

(Puzzle 4) Fireflies have been a part of ancient Mayan mythology, through association with the stars.
(i) True, then D = 4.
(ii) False, then D = 9.

(Puzzle 5) The Stage 1 cache container was a:
(i) micro, then E = 7.
(ii) nano, then E = 1.
(iii) regular, then E = 9.

(Puzzle 6) The Stage 2 firefly colour was:
(i) green, then F = 1.
(ii) red, then F = 4.
(iii) yellow, then F = 8.

(Step 1) Solve the puzzles above, then insert the numbers here to get the coordinate for the final stage: N43° 26.ABC' W080° 34.DEF'.
(Step 2) Once at the coordinate, scan the forest to locate the firefly! A camera flash or flashlight may help.
(Step 3) The cache is at the firefly!
