Willain Laing and William D Stephens each have a fountain dedicated to them and were co-founders of the Tyne Tees Steam Shipping Company. They were both strong advocates of temperance and Laing founded the Town Moor Temperance Festival, which evolved into the Hoppings fair, still held every year towards the end of June. Laing's memorial is opposite the well-known ‘Blue House’ built in 1895 for the stockman who tended the cattle on the moor and which was previously the location of a toll house.
Next to the Stephens memorial is Fleming Memorial Hospital patients’ shelter:
This shelter – the gift of Stanley Miller – is
intended for the use of patients and their
parents visiting the Fleming Memorial
Hospital for sick children MCMXXVIII
Fleming Memorial Hospital for Sick Children, opened in 1863, was originally located at Hanover Square. In 1886, John Fleming, a Newcastle Solicitor gave £25,000 to build a new hospital for sick children in memory of his wife, who had died in 1882. It was officially opened by Lord Armstrong on 26 September 1888 and closed in 1988 when the work of the hospital was transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Little is known of the other fountain, which is dedicated to Edwin Dodd Colvill, a coal fitter.

Parking can be tricky and is restricted at certain times so it may be best to visit after 6:30pm or park in the middle and walk. Please note that although there are paths and wide verges, this is a very busy road so you will need to keep kids and dogs in check.
