A cache (Pro. Cash) is hidden container left for others to find. To Geocache is using global positioning technology to find a hidden container. In the sepia days you would use a compass and map. Today we use the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with the internet. Literally 1000's of caches are hidden with gifts and messages for you to find. All you need is a GPS receiver, internet access and a sense of adventure. Next to finding a cache the best part is it's free.
The object of this cache is to provide the instructions and opportunity for those in Lake Macquarie who may be new to geocaching to have a go at finding their first cache. "Lets Follow The Arrow" is a very easy 1 & 1/2 (out of 5) star difficulty and 1.5 star terrain cache. The location may not be as special as other harder caches nearby but its object is to show potential cachers just how easy it can be. Kids will love finding this one any way.
"Lets Follow The Arrow" is a cache the size of a small jar. Within it is an assortment of items for people to swap. You can take a small item with you to put in the cache and then you can remove another item to keep or put into a cache elsewhere. Also within the cache is an introduction letter, in case it is accidentally found with the log and heaps of pens cause they always die. When you find the cache simply write you have found it, a comment and the date and time. Some teams also use stamps and have special names and signatures.
You will need two or three things to find this cache. Comfy clothes and shoes, some water of its hot and a GPS with fresh batteries. If you are further a field you could use a can use a bike or car. The cache is on a ridge in bushland so there is a little bushwalk which is why it is rated 1.5 terrain and difficulty.

Before you set off - print this page out and complete this checklist:
( ) Fresh Batteries in GPS for at least an hour or two if walking.
( ) Goto 'settings' in your GPSr and choose WSG84 Map Datum.
( ) While in settings - change the coordinates info to Degrees Minutes Decimals instead of the usual default of Degrees Minutes Seconds. This looks similar to “DD MM.MMM” in your GPSr menus.
( ) You will also need a swap item if you choose to take something from the cache. This is usually a small nonperishable toy, trinket or coupon. Never hide consumables.
Before you set off, check that the coordinates you have put in the cache are the same as the ones on the cache page you have printed out. It's an easy mistake.
(1) Once your GPSr has generally 4 satellites it will start tracking and become more accurate. Then go to waypoints and choose what you Marked your cache as.
(2) Select “goto” or a similar selection command and verify you have the right waypoint selected on a navigate page.
(3) Next walk in a straight line and allow the GPSr arrow to point which way and how far the cache is. Once this is done you to work out roughly where and how you will go to it. With Rivers, Railways, Roads and Residents blocking your path, this can sometimes be the hardest part. Other times arriving is easy and finding can take what feels like hours. Patience is a virtue I only have now and then.
(5) Now start driving or walking to the cache. If you choose to drive it is a good idea to share the experience with a friend and have then be the navigator. Choose streets that bring you closer to the cache. Being a 1.5/1.5 cache you will park nearby and then just follow the arrow to the cache.
You will find it usually within a 10 to 12 metre radius of where your GPSr considers should be Ground Zero or GZ. Your GPS'r will zero out "0.00m". I usually put my GPS on my hat and search for 5 minutes then check back after it has averaged a while. I usually search for 20 minutes before decrypting the clue below. Being a 1.5/1.5 you will see this cache almost immeadiately after you arrive.
(6) Once you have found the cache, swap your items, fill out the logpage and return home. Take the time then to log on to the net by going back into geocaching.com and log that you have found your first cache. This will then register your find. Congratulations - Welcome to Geo-Caching.
