Geocache Description:

Unique micro cache hidden in the area

To find this cache I’ll need to turn back the clock to October 3rd, 1907. I’m taking you to an area known as Shantytown. In 1907 Shantytown was known as one of the roughest spots on the C&O Canal. Shantytown had a mixture of stores, bars, boarding houses, and bordellos. The law enforcement officers from the Cumberland City police patrolled this area on a daily basis. On the night of October 3rd Officer August Baker was called to Shantytown for a man causing a disturbance in the street. When Officer Baker arrived in Shantytown he placed the man, William Burns under arrest. Officer Baker started to walk Burns towards the Cumberland Police station when he resisted, pulling a gun from his pocket shooting Officer Baker. Both of the men fell to the ground where Officer Baker subdued Burns with the assistance of several people. Officer Baker was seriously wounded and was taken to the Western Maryland Hospital on Decatur Street. Officer Baker remained in critical condition until the early morning hours of October 5th when he died from the gun shot wound.
Following the shooting Burns was taken to the police station , accompanied by several citizens. He was later transferred to the county jail in Prospect Square. The death of Officer Baker aroused great anger in the community. On the night of October 5th a mob forced their way into the jail , removed Burns and killed him in the street.
Officer Baker was known as a brave and well-liked police officer who paid the ultimate price for his service to the citizens of Cumberland. Officer August Baker is the only Cumberland police officer that has been killed in the line of duty.
Present day the area of Shantytown is now S.Wineow Street. The cache is hidden in the area where Officer Baker was shot. The cache is located in a busy area. I would recommend looking for the cache before 8:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. on week days. On weekends traffic in the area should be less and the cache would be available all day.
