Geocache Description:

Apart from the wonderful views (which alone are worth the trip here), Landermere Quay has many other claims to fame.

The quay was purchased by Richard Rigby (the man who commissioned the building of Mistley Towers) in 1781, who built a row of cottages and a pub, the (sadly long closed) King's Head. One of these cottages is called Gull Cottage, after Sir William Gull, physician to Queen Victoria and once a suspect in the Jack the Ripper case. He was the son of an Essex barge owner and was, in fact, born on a barge at St Osyth.

A contemporary of Gull's, Frederick Kemster, a giant of a man at 8 feet 4.5 inches, used to amuse the residents of the cottages by shaking their hands through the top windows! The background picture of this page is a photograph of him doing exactly that through the top window of the previously mentioned King's Head pub at Landermere Quay.

Landermere was also the home of Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, the artist who created the wonderful mosaic artworks at Tottenham Court Road tube station.

The Walton Backwaters, which can be seen from Landermere, were the setting for Arthur Ransome's eighth book in the Swallows and Amazons series, Secret Water.

All of these tales are interesting and there's lots more to learn about each of them. The main reason for coming to find this cache, however, is the beautiful view. It's a lovely, almost secret spot, and well-worth spending a little time walking down to a place which has so much history and is such a wonderful place to relax.

This cache was placed during the Essex International Jamboree 2008 by Sinclair of Rosslyn. It's just a couple of miles from the site of the Jamboree camp.

Many thanks to Gillywig for the lovely picture that I've used as the title shot.
