Geocache Description:

This is part of the Shandaken Geocache Challenge series. Buried within the description you will find a bit of local history and perhaps a clue. Be sure to look for all in the series:
Allaben - Big Indian - Bushnellsville - Chichester - Highmount - Mt Pleasant - Mt Tremper - Oliverea - Phoenicia - Pine Hill - Shandaken.

Enjoy!

Presented by the Scouts of Pack 60, Shandaken, NY, BSA

Phoenicia
The largest hamlet in the Town of Shandaken, Phoenicia was once a busy hub of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. Except for a few new buildings, it hasn't changed that much since the original eleven lots were laid out on each side of the street in 1853.

You might want to check out stories about Dutch Schultz's treasure (one such story is at www.catskill.net/purple/schultz.htm) or ride the Catskill Mountain Railroad while in the area.

The location given will bring you to a local landmark that will need to be read for clues to the next location - a blue historical sign. From here you should be sent to the actual location of the cache.

For all dates use MMDDYYYY format replacing any blanks with zeros. For example January 5 2008 would be 01052008, April 1957 would be 04001957. The results will be latitude & longitude number - you just have to add back in degree and decimal marks.

At the first landmark:
1 - Find the date it was dedicated and the date the time capsule will be opened.
2 - From 12436817 subtract the dedicated date to get the latitude.
3 - From 14460568 subtract the time capsule open date to get the longitude.

This will hopefully get you to a blue historical marker sign. On this sign:
1 - Find a beginning date and an ending date.
2 - from 04206678 subtract the beginning date to get the latitude.
3 - from 07421045 subtract the ending date to get the longitude.

You will now have the coordinates to the cache!

The cache is on private property (with permission) so please take care! The cache itself is a 50 cal. ammo box, so lots of room for trade goodies. The initial cache has some kid oriented goodies and a supply of Shandaken Challenge wooden Nickels for the first few to find. the cache is in a very obvious spot. The scouts request you try to find it without the clue to give it some difficulty.

Added info on 08/17/2008 - You are in the right place to park if you are about midway between 2 driveways and in front of a vacant lot. The path to the cache is basically level with a slight raise at the final hide. Only mild bushwhacking is required into the trees. No need to cross any lawn, driveway or flowerbeds.

If you can't find the cache - you can check your answer for the final location at Geochecker.com -

Congrats to ARKVILLE for being the first to complete the challenge!
