Geocache Description:

The Johnson Nature Preserve is the most unique component of Montgomery's diverse park system. On April 9, 1999, an F4 tornado damaged a path .85 miles long through the City of Montgomery including this nature preserve. Over 90% of the mature trees were destroyed by uprooting, splintering or shattering caused by the violent winds of the tornado.

The recovery plan developed then was to enhance the powerful natural reforestation process by leaving much of the fallen timber in place to provide stabilization of slopes, an enhanced wildlife habitat and to add organic content to the soil of the forest floor.

Now 9 years after that event the preserve is beginning to regain the look of beautiful forest. Ms Scarlet and I hiked through a good portion of the park and found the visit was quite nice. There’s a large portion of the mature trees still standing and they have an immense overhead canopy that shades the hiking trails.

This 7 acre preserve features a walking/hiking trail, creek, and a nature area.

I hope you find the preserve and the cache I placed here for you invigorating.

You can access the park from Deerfield Road, southbound from Cornell Rd. or northbound from Pfeiffer Rd, or via Creek Road, eastbound from Reed Hartman Hwy/Kenwood Rd.

Parking is available at N 39-15.590 W 084-21.400
