Pine Hill
Pine Hill takes its name from the steep ascent rising towards Belleayre that famously challenged travelers and settlers heading west. Although settled during the late 1700’s, Pine Hill came into its own when the railroad reached it in 1872. Soon thereafter, the hamlet became a thriving resort. Summer visitors poured in to enjoy its spectacular scenery, clean air and pure water. Accommodations lined every street, the larger hotels bearing grand-sounding or romantic names, such as the Wellington and the Avon Inn. Home to two bowling alleys, two newspapers, several churches and stores, a silent movie theater, a stately stone library, and the Crystal Spring Water Company, Pine Hill was justly called the “Saratoga of the Catskills”.
Located in a local town park, there is a playground for the kids, a couple picnic tables and a tennis court. Park hours are 8am to dusk. A easy find, however, a direct line from the parking lot to the cache will put you through some poison ivy. This is why the difficulty is rated so high. If you take a look you should see a nice clear spot to enter the woods. So take care!
The cache itself is a 30 cal. ammo box, so room for trade goodies. It initial cache has some kid oriented goodies and a supply of Shandaken Challenge wooden Nickels for the first few to find.
Please park at the parking coordinates. Your GPS will have you quite close from the main highway but very unsafe to park there and the slope from the road to the cache is tretcherous.
Congrats to ARKVILLE for being the first to complete the challenge!
