Sunken Garden Trail Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Let's Take a Hike: Hello. The original version of this geocache was established in 2003 by a person I have never met. Keystone reviewer asked me to take it over in 2004 or 2005. It has been moved in order to avoid trail making several times. According to Pennsylvania State Park rules geocaches must be removed after 2 yrs. It's high time that the Sunken Garden Trail Cache be decommissioned.

From the cache: I have lasted through snow, rain, heat and cold. I endured a bear attack, was sniffed by countless dogs and visited by children, and adults of nearly every age. I have contained all sorts of junk, treasures and trackables. I have heard the squeals of glee from first time finders and seen the quick grab and run cachers who sometimes don't even bother to open my lid before they log their "find" and run off to see another. It's been a wonderful life. Thank you for your love.

This cache is in Moraine State Park on the South Shore along the Sunken Garden Trail. Park at N40°56.461', W80°05.582'. Follow the Sunken Garden trail over a little bridge. Turn left at the SECOND trail intersection after the bridge. The trail now goes through a "sunken garden" or hidden valley. The valley is actually the result of strip mining. We have been hiking in this area of Moraine Park in every season for over twenty year. In the spring we enjoy flowers such as wild Rose, Wild Cherry, and Apple Blossoms here. In the summer as you can stole along you’re likely to see butterfies and hear birds guarding their nests. In the winter this is an excellent hiking and cross-country skiing area. Wildlife including snakes, geese, ducks, deer, beaver and muskrat are commonly seen here. You may be lucky and see the Osprey (a raptor) which nest on the North Shore by McDaniel’s Boat Launch. After you have found the cache you might want to continue along the trail. It makes a loop climbing to the top of the hill (is the hill a glacial moraine?), running along a ridge and returning down a long hill to the bridge you crossed.
I searched and searched for a hiding place that would involve some hiking, take you to interesting places and avoid poison ivy and jagger bushes. The cache is about half a mile from the parking area. When replacing the cache, be careful to place it so that it is not easily seen from the trail. Happy trails to you ?
