Welcome to Luckey Hospital. Dr. James E. Luckey, founder of the Luckey Hospital, was born in 1865 and graduated from the Americian Medical College in Chiciago in 1892. Dr. Luckey had 3 sons. Hugh, Robert (bob), and Harold. Hugh became a oil prospector, Robert became a Doctor, and Harold and electrical engineer. In 1929 construction of the hospital began and the building was fully functional by 1931 After Dr. Luckey's death, his sons and other doctors operated the hospital until 1957. The hospital was then used as a nursing home and then eventually apartments until Dr. Luckey's great neices purchased the building in 2000 Dr. J.E. Luckey started his medical practice in 1892 . Dr. Luckey married Doiseny Benfer in 1892. The hospital land was purchased in 1901. Dr. Luckey was one of the very few doctors making house calls until his death in1938 In 1931 the funeral homes were using thier hearses to bring people to the hospital rather than taking them by private car. The hospital consists of 3 floors. Basement. Had a tunnel that connected the hospital to Dr. Luckey's home. A fully equipped kitchen that suppied all the food for the hospital, dining room for staff and visitors, maintence room and a sleeping room for the maintenance man who had to keep the coal burning in the furnace through the night. There were also rooms that had storage for food, coal and pharmaceutical supplies. There was an additional locked storage room that barrels of 90 proof alcohol was stored. Two cisterns were connected to the down spouts from the roof providing soft water for the laundry. The laundry was origionaly done at the Luckey home, but because of the machine, a bendix bolted to the floor, the noise became to much and it was moved to the hospital. First floor- Was the center of activity. Had an elevator and stairs for those family and friends who come to visit patients. It was furnished with red leather sofas and chairs. The most spoken word on this floor was NEXT!!! Also the main Doctors office, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Medicine dispensing room, Business office, 2 public restrooms and X-Ray room and a 2 bed patient ward and the Exam rooms and the most important Emercency Room. Second floor- Main patient care area. This floor consisted of 18 patient beds in either private or semi private accommodations. The bathrooms had a tub and a linen closet and utility closet for cleaning supplies. The nursing station was located in the hall where the staff could see all the patient call lights. There was also a 4 bed maternity ward with a small nursery. This hospital had modern convieniences. Portable suction equiptment and oxygen tents. very few I.V.s were administered but the capabilities were there. Sulfa was the drug of choise but penicillin had been discovered and was being used. Codine and Morphine were given by injection. Third floor- This is the smallest of the floors. This housed the surgical suite on the south end. The south side suite had a large picture window. Even thought the hospital had electricity and there was and electrical surgical light on the celing the natural light admitted by that large window allowed for much better lighting than the the fuxture itself. On the north end was the labor and delivery room. Originally the deliveries were done in the surgical room but it became so busy they moved the delivery room to what had been the sun porch. This room had widows on 3 sides to allow for more and better lighting. And all this light was beneficial to new babies. And they knew that the sunlight helped prevent jaundice. Also located on this floor were additional sleeping rooms for staff, visiting doctors and others needing rest and a restroom and doctors lounge. The Luckey Hospital Museum Aug 6, 2006 The hospital is now used as a Museum and apartments and a free health clinic during the week. The apartments are on the second floor of this building now.
