In the Defence of the Realm is a series which was started by Mike and Christine Levett and covers mainly airfields used during and shortly after the Second World War

Chailey airfield was constructed as an "Advanced Landing Ground" (A.L.G.) and was operational between 1943 and 1946. It was a base for Polish Spitfire Squadrons.
Incidentally the runway orientation 08/26, is identical to the orientation of Gatwick airport runway.

The co-ordinates at the top of the cache page are for reference only.

On completion of a mission you find yourself over the sea so turn North to the Sussex coast.
You soon locate the lighthouse on the end of Newhaven breakwater, from where you know the following details.
Fly 9.25 miles bearing 342 degrees T until you reach a road/railway crossing.
Now alter course to bearing 326 degrees T.
After 4.1 miles the airfield will be under your starboard wing.
Continue on this bearing for another 0.7 miles and you will see the beginning of a footpath.
(Rumour has it that this footpath leads to a hidden cache approximately 1 mile away.)
Circle back to airfield and land.

You decide to try and find the cache so drive to the footpath where you can easily park.
Take the footpath signposted between houses and follow the waymarkers, counting the styles as you go. At the 5th style, if you look in the tree about 12 inches above the ground and about 4 feet before the style, should find a Geocache. (GC1F8EW)
(Please replace this cache carefully and make sure it does not fall down)
Continue to follow the footpath and you should evenutally come to a bridge.
At the base of the tree nearest the far end of the bridge you should find another Geocache (GC1F8EY)
Continue to follow the footpath and you should soon be walking across a field which was the original runway for ALG Chailey.
Continue on the footpath and when you reach the 9th style go forward another 184 feet, where you should find an Oak tree.
