Hergott Springs was named after Joseph Herrgott, a German
botanist on Babbage's expedition to northern South Australia in
1858 and on Stuart's 1860 expedition to central Australia. It was
sometimes referred to as Mari, an Aboriginal word for 'place of
many possums'. During WWI the name was changed to Marree.
