This micro cache is located at a major historic site for this area, which has now been turned in to a rest area.
“Shelter form the west wind,” which is known to us today as Wangaraleednie, was the site of the first settlement of our area. Originally it was a station consisting of about 43ml² but over the next 20 years was extended to about 974km², and was owned by the McKenchnie brothers Dr James, Donald & Peter. They first settled this area in 1853, but when James and Donald died in 1869 Peter returned to Scotland, leaving David McKenzie to manage the station. From 1873 to 1927 the property was owned and managed by a number of different people until it was bought by L. R. Whyte & it is still in the family to day.
The meaning of the name is not quite consistent but pretty close to meaning the same. The ‘Saga of Wangaraleednie’ book, which has a wealth of information in it, describes Wangaraleednie as meaning ‘Hill of the west wind’, but the plaque reads ‘Shelter from the west wind’. We will let you make your own mind up on that one.
The rest area, which is sign posted, is on the tourist route and has a plaque, a table and chairs, some old agricultural machinery and of course a cache. The chimney of the old homestead and the graves can be seen to the west of GZ.
Please keep off the private property.
