It's an election year; the candidates have their short lists; and
so do I. The purpose of this series is to pay sincere tribute to
this areas Geocaching Hall of Famers.
I've had this idea for a while, and had already made out my short
list of those that I wanted to induct, and the reasons why; but I
also have done some informal surveys, where the participants did
not know that they were being surveyed. And when it comes to the
southside, there is one name that always comes up -- SOLAR! The
word on the street is "this guy doesn't even know how to spell
DNF!" One person said: "there hasn't been a cache hidden that Solar
can't find." LZ33 lost his GPSr out in the woods; went back and
tried to find it, but couldn't; and Solar heard about the mishap,
then went out and found the thing based on just a phone call!
There's been a time or two when a cache or a stage was missing, and
Solar reported finding it 100-200 feet away; while most of us can't
find something if the coords are 40 feet off! If you look up his
stats, you will find that it says he logged 1174 caches, but you
will also notice that the last one was logged in August of 2005.
For some mysterious reason he no longer logs his finds on the
website. We joking say that it's not about the numbers, but Solar
proves it! There is no telling just how many cache logs he has
actually signed, or how many of them were FTFs. But then super
heroes usually do keep their true identity a secret!!! I am sure
that he wouldn't want the attention, but there are several of us
that think Solar is the best cacher of all time. Thanks for your
friendship, and your contribution to the game!
