Geocache Description:

Bulgaria, Vratsa. Altitude 1100m. 700 meters denivelation.

The path starts at the place of the abandoned mine Plakalnica; a rather gloomy landscape, especially at sunset. It looks like taken from a Sci-Fi book (Dune in particular) with all that sand and strange looking towers sticking out of it.

As you progress upwards along the stream the trail gets steeper and you cross some wooden bridges standing at 15 meters from the gorge below. Science have proved that wood sooner or later rots and breaks so its rather interesting to see whether it will happen at the exact time of your passing or not ;)
Fortunately the “rangers” from Vrachanski Balkan national park regularly take care of the wooden stuff that appears to cause trouble.
The way is very well marked – besides bridges there are tons of wooden stairways, parapets etc. Quite the things one should expect from an “eco-trail”.

The waterfall is also quite high – over 60 meters. Sometimes in summer there is no water, sometimes there is - whatever the gods decide.
In winter it’s rather a spectacular sight too as it is transformed in several enormous ice columns. When hiking in winter one should also be aware that the rocks at the bottom of the waterfall are heavily covered with ice. That makes passing difficult or even dangerous; you may need crampons and an ice axe to make sure that you reach the coveted cache spot.

If you have survived the rotten bridges you should try your luck with the waterfall cliffs; they offer quite an amazing view of the whole valley. Last time I was there I made a video of a creeping snail on the cliff and spent fifteen minutes on the spot for that reason. The bad thing is that I didn’t even get to know whether the bastard will fall off the cliff or not. It seems snails aren’t the most intelligent beings in the universe.
Anyway by that time you should have already found the cache so you should have more interesting things to do rather than making snail videos.

Late spring (May or June) or early autumn is undoubtedly the best time to visit the place. The reason is that the region of Vratza has a “nice” winter that is biting cold and a “pleasant” hot summer. The total denivelation of the trail is 700 meters; it usually takes an hour and a half from the start to reach the lovely meadow above the waterfall. A place where you can rest, drink, sing, dance or whatever you like that doesn’t disturb anyone.
If you want to extend your trip from here you can continue to Parshevitza hut.

Additional info: Normally it takes 1h 20m from Vratza to the beginning of the trail.
Also there are buses to Zgorigrad a few times a day. Taking a taxi is also an option – it’ll cost you not more than 3-4 lv.
