Miette Hot Springs
One of the interesting features of the Rocky Mountains is the
existence of the various hot springs. A hot spring is a spring that
is produced by the emergence of geothermally-heated groundwater
from the earth's crust. There are hot springs all over the earth,
on every continent and even under the oceans and seas.
The water of Miette Hot Spring is the highest among the four hot
springs in the Rocky Mountains. Flowing from the mountain at 54°C,
the water is cooled to a comfortable temperature of 40°C as it
enters the pools.
Most of the rain and snow that falls on the slopes of a mountain
ends up in rivers and streams. Some of it, however, filters down
through the cracks and pores in the mountain rock, pulled by
gravity to a depth of three kilometres below the surface. It is
this water which later returns to the surface in the Miette Hot
Springs.
As it seeps into the ground, the water becomes hotter and hotter —
heated by radioactive decay in the earth's core. When the water
boils, pressure forces it upward, just like the water in a coffee
percolator. The speed at which the water rises, and the degree to
which it mixes with cold ground water, causes the temperature to
fluctuate.
To log this cache answer these three questions:
* What is the top five minerals found in the Miette Hot Springs?
* Ask one of the liveguards the exact watertemperature of both hot
pools the day you visit the Miette Hot Spring and e-mail me this
also.
* And from how many sources are these pools filled with hot water
every day?
Don't forget:
* Post picture of you with GPS at the hot springs.
