Geocache Description:

This is an easy landcare cache that takes you to a Soil Conservation Demonstration site located adjacent to a bitumen road and requires a short stroll through a revegetation plot.

This site demonstrates the reclamation of saline soil using a variety of floral species. It was launched in 1990, organized by the Hummocks Soil Conservation Board and part of the National Soil Conservation project.
The plantation is entirely comprised of native floral plants - the majority being indigenous species to the local area. If you are interested in botany, you will spot a wide range of local acacias, gums, saltbushes and the occasional WA blue gum.
An impact of the revegetation project may be seen by looking at the paddock 300 metres to the west. The current vegetation is predominately creeping-saltbush, boxthorns and nitre bush. The landowner has cleared most of the introduced boxthorns, but has retained some as it acts as a protection from grazing cattle, sheltering remnant vegetation, eg ruby saltbush.
The landowner also talks of stories of the local residents of 250 years ago lying under the nitre bush, chewing the nitre bush seeds and enjoying the “tipsy effects” of the seeds fermenting in the gut.

This cache is located on private land with the landowners permission – but he specifically asks visitors to respect this eco-site - absolutely no litter and stringent care when climbing fences /using gates.

Garden / floral swaps preferred
