Geocache Description:

Discover some of south Wales' Prettiest waterfalls. The coordinates are for a small car park which allows easy access to the path. The path can be very wet and slippery after rain and there are some steep drops down to the river. Please note The car park at coordinates is ONLY OPEN SEPTEMBER TO MARCH! Outside those dates start point is (Approx)N 51° 47.000 W 003° 35.065

In South Wales, and the Vale of Neath in particular, the typical cause of waterfall formation is due to differential erosion of soft and hard rock strata found together in the river bed. Where historic movements in the earth's crust has caused faulting, or glacial erosion has exposed the softer underlying rock strata to the erosive forces of the river, it will cut more deeply and quickly into the softer rock creating a drop in the water level and, consequently, boosting the erosive power of the water. In the Vale of Neath we find extremely hard, erosion resistant rocks such a millstone grit and old red sandstone overlying bands of softer fissured carboniferous limestone and fossiliferous shales. When the water finds its way through the joints and along the bedding planes of the harder rock exposing the shales and limestone, the water soon begins to take its toll on the softer rocks and so depriving the harder rocks of support, causing them to collapse which then leaves waterfalls. The main river with this effect is the river Melte which is slightly west of these waterfalls which are on the river Nedd Fechan. These waterfalls are smaller than those on the river Mellte to the east but I think these are a nicer walk. About 1.8 Km south from the car park you will come to a junction of rivers head right (West) from here about 400M and you will come to the largest waterfall on this route known as 'Ladies Waterfall' (Sgwd Gwladys)Waterfall is on the river Pyrddin.
Follow the path to the top of this waterfall and email me (Using the account link above. Don't forget to release your email address!) the width of the top of the waterfall (in Metres) from the far wall (South side?) to the edge of the grass
you should be able to pace it to the waters edge then add a bit for the water
Please be careful when measuring as it is quite a drop
If you don't get a response to your email please go ahead and log your story if there is an issue I'll be in touch.
