BASQUE
Betidanik Puiu deitu izan diote gure zaharrek eta ez Puio gaur ezagutzen dugun moduan. XIX. Mende hasieran Bergarako Irakaskuntza Komentua erlijio-elkartearena zen lursaila. 1855Ean, desamortizazio legeak zirela eta, Estatuaren eskuetara igaro zen lursaila. Karlistaldietan liberalen – beltzen- gotorleku bilakatu zen Puiu gaineko eraikuntza. Gero, Pedro Ordoki jaunak erosi zuen lursaila. Jaun aberats horrek 60,000 buruko behi aziendaren jabe zen Argentinan, baita trenbide batena ere. Hori zela eta, Puiu gainera igotzeko erabilera pribatuko funikularra eraiki zuen, Txubilokoaren antzekoa. Hainbatetan izan zen errea, eta azken sutearen ostean, hondamendi egoeran egon zen urte luzez. 2003 inguruan, Jesus eta Mariaren Misio Ekintza erlijio-elkarteak erabat eraberritu zuen eta gogarte etxetzat erabiltzen dute egun. Lursailean, jauregiarenak ziren bi eraikuntza xume ere baziren: Puiuberri eta Berogutxi. Lehena Morlas auzoaren gaineko baserria eta bigarrena funikularraren geltoki izandako etxea. Badira urte batzuk desagertu direla.

Zer dela eta gaskoi toponimoak Donostian? Bada, Antso Jakituna, Nafarroako erregea, XII. Mendean Donostia hiribildua sortu zuenean, gaskoiek populatu behar zutela agindu zuen. Beraz, bertako nafarrak ez, gaskoiak izan ziren Donostia hiribildu berriko lehen biztanleak. Gaskoierako Puy edo Puyo hitzetik dator, eta gain, muino edo mendixka adierazten du; eta halaxe da gure Puiu ere!

ENGLISH
Our ancestors have always called it Puiu instead of Puio, as it is known nowadays. In the beginning of the 19th century, the land belonged to a religious association called Educational Convent of Bergara. In 1855, due to the disentailment laws, it became a state property. During the Carlist wars, the building located on top of Puiu was used as fortress of the liberals – blacks. Afterwards, Mr. Pedro Ordoki bought it. This rich man owned 60,000 cows in Argentina as well as a railway. That's why he built a private-use funicular, similar to the one in Txunbilo. It was burnt several times and it has been in ruin conditions since then. Around 2003, the religious association Jesus eta Mariaren Misio Ekintza (Jesus and Mary Mission Activities) renewed the building and they use it as their headquarters nowadays. There were another two small buildings in the field. One was Puiuberri (new puiu, in Basque), a farm that was on top of Morlas neighbour. The other one was Berogutxi (In Basque bero: warm, gutxi: little) which was the funicular station. Both have disappeared some years ago.

Why Gascognian place names in Donostia? That's because when Antso Jakituna (King of Navarre) founded the town of Donostia, he ordered the Gascoignians should populate it. So the first citizens of the town of Donostia were not navarres but Gascognians. Gascognian word Puy or Puyo means hill, top, hillock... and that is exactly what our Puiu is!
