Geocache Description:

Cache coordinates and description amended 11 June 12; 28 April 19 The cache is near the boundary between Los Alamos County and Sandoval County. Santa Fe National Forest is on the Los Alamos side, Bandelier is on the Sandoval side. The fence divides the two.

I do not want this cache to be difficult. I want it to be interesting, and a bit different. This is NOT one of those difficult “puzzle” caches. No special skills are required. No need to search the internet for any advanced mathematical formulas or conversion charts. If you change a couple of parameters on your GPSr and do a simple subtraction problem, your GPSr will lead you right to the final cache. If you’d like clarification on this paragraph, send me an email. This is an offset cache which also involves finding NGS Benchmark FO0090 (G208). Bring your camera if you want to take a picture and log the benchmark. The coordinates are for parking and the starting point. Refer to the "Google Earth Overview" photo below for a ravens eye view. From parking, take the trail East for about 40-50 yards. The trail goes through the gamble oak bushes (but you can go around). Turn South off the trail and go past the white post. Continue South for about 500 feet. The NGS benchmark will be “set in a boulder” just before the curve in the road. "Mark" the coordinates of this benchmark. I suggest setting your GPSr on the benchmark for at least 3-5 minutes to allow it to average and get an accurate reading. From this benchmark the cache is about 185 METERS on a bearing of about 025° TRUE. It will be on the East side of the fence. To avoid climbing the fence (it isn’t necessary) head North to the trail, turn right and follow the trail through the gate. Due to dead-fall and the growth of scrub oak, some bushwhacking will be required unless you make a big loop around. (2019) The cache is a Pelican Cache Container and should be fairly easy to find. Look for the subtle visual clues which betray it’s hiding place. The SECOND finder prize is (was) an LED Book Light. It may be the early bird that gets the worm (FTF) but it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese! Enjoy the view.
