Northbound: This geocache was first placed in 2008 when there were steps that led down the hill. The hint was correct for many years but sounds like the steps have been removed.

Height of Land has also been archived as the container (hidden under sticks behind a tree - hint is correct) either keeps going missing or geocachers are mistakenly looking under stairs, thinking of the Shady Lake cache. I also no lomger have a vacation property in the area and Parks Canada, who i contacted, is unable to maintain it for me.

Geocache Description:

The cache is a small lock-n-lock covered in camoflauged duct tape hidden under one of the stairs nearest the bottom.
Dogs must be leashed.

Shady Lake Lookout - Belvédère du Lac-Shady

From the platform, you can see Shady Lake and the Waskesiu Hills. Before the Park was established, Shady Lake was the location of one of the largest stopping places on the historic Freight Trail. “The Forks” was situated at the north end of Shady on Mud Creek and was the local headquarters for trappers, fishermen and traders working in the area.

There was a two-room log cabin, bunkhouses, stables, other shanties and shed and a small graveyard with a picket fence.

The Forks was only occupied in winter when freight sleighs were operating. The trail was almost impassable in summer due to muskeg and deadfalls.

Descending 70 metres by stair, you will find a mineral lick frequented by deer, moose and elk. At the lick, they find abundant minerals that have been brought to the surface by underground springs. Look for their tracks in the rich mud. Just beyond the lick is Shady Lake. In spring and summer, listen for loons and grebes, seasonal inhabitants of Shady.

This 2km trail will take you along the shoreline of Shady Lake and through aspen and birch, with a second trail giving you the option to hike up to Height of Land Tower, or to continue on the original trail loop back to the stair.
