Geocache Description:

At the end of a wonderful hike in Glacier National Park.

This cache is one of 4 caches placed in Glacier National Park in July of 2008. The location is at the end of a 4.5 km trail (called Great Glacier), starting from the Illecillewaet Campground trailhead. The trail winds through the valley bottom them climbs moderately up to the former toe of the Great Glacier, now called the Illecillewaet Glacier. Over the last 100+ years, the glacier has retreated 1.5 km up and the hike ends at the scraped bedrock. The cache container is only a short walk from the trail end. Many hikers climb up the exposed bedrock and the ice can be reached in about an hour, but the route involves both scrambling and route-finding. A more hiker-oriented approach would be the Perley Rock Trail or the Glacier Crest Trail if seeing the Illecillewaet Neve is the goal. The cache container is small and contains only a logbook and pencil, following Parks Canada guidelines. So many of the hikes in this park are steep and strenuous, but this one climbs to a nice spot with a reasonable altitude gain and a good trail. The cache can be combined with two others in the valley - Meeting of the Waters and Glacier House.
2013 Note - The placement of the cache is very close to the location of the toe of the glacier in 1898.
